about

I can't write enough about this track. I introduced myself to Bathory in 1988 when they released Blood Fire Death which at the time I didn't have the right words to even describe it.. like listening to mountains move ... there simply isn't enough I can write about what Quorthon meant to me and what his music said to me. I then went backwards to Under the Sign and so ... So let me get to the track.

There are many cover versions of this song on YouTube, Bandcamp etc. I think mine is the first to dispense with guitars completely, and come up with a completely orchestrated version, but this is a completely vocal driven song and the vocal delivery has inspired many, many songs since then including my own. Without the vocal its a great horror movie track. I confess I cannot simply hold enough breath as Quorthon did when he recorded this (I am older now than he was then!) but I have given it as much as I could, this was a six beer recording session. In terms of arrangement I took the original riffs, I replaced all with double bass, cello, viola and violin sections, horns for partcular parts, solo guitar I transcribed and put a trumpet switching to violins and horns. Further rearrangements based on interpretation and "what sounds about right!". In addition to the drummer have an orchestral percussion set for the atmospheric sounds which includes canastas! Whatever else this song is it is an important part of my younger life and I have really enjoyed studying it to pieces over the past week and I hope this version is enjoyed as much as I enjoyed putting this arrangement together. Hail all of us, Bathory Hordes; Thomas Forsberg, I love you, you brought so much to me.
