about

Karl Marx's notebooks (the Grundrisse) has a very interesting section which is known as the Fragment on Machines which some say predicts the "knowledge economy", where knowledge is absorbed into capital and further alienates labour - Paul Mason has quite a bit to say on this and its worth looking up, but as Marx points out, this is where rather than a human operating a machine, a machine operates humans. Eerily prescient.

lyrics

Automatic system of machinery
Set in motion by automaton
A moving power than moves itself
Workers cast as conscious parts

Living labour owned by object labour
Machine is not human means
Only machine’s will be done

Machines supervises
Machine stops interruptions
Machine has strength and skill
It is virtuoso
Machine becomes mighty ruler
Humans only part of machine
Consumes coal and oil
A soul of its own

Machine produces vast quantities
No need for producers
Knowledge absorbed into capital
Alien and external

A soul of it own
A soul of its own
Alien external
